SILVERSTONE, Great Britain -- American racing driver Santino Ferrucci said he took pride in making his Formula One debut with Haas during a test day at Silverstone on Tuesday.The 18-year-old completed 55 laps of the grand prix circuit before wet weather brought an early end to the teams planned aerodynamic testing. He became the first American to drive an American F1 car since Danny Ongais raced a Penske PC4 at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1977 and Ferrucci said he was proud to bring an all-American line-up back to the track.Oh man! Even having an American team, when you first hear the rumours, you are like Is this real?, he said. Obviously all these guys did a fantastic job to build it up and to be doing as well as they are this year has been great.For me to get the opportunity to be the first American in an American team since 1977 was an impressive milestone I think. So I was really proud of that and proud of the team. I think everyone did a good job.Ferrucci has been working his way up the racing ladder from junior categories in the U.S.A. to British Formula 3 and now GP3. However, the Haas F1 car he drove on Tuesday represented a huge step in performance, with significantly more downforce and a Ferrari-built V6 turbo engine capable of producing over 900bhp.Ferrucci said the prospect of driving in the wet with the potential to cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage was a daunting prospect that he still needs to build up to.I really wanted to go out there in the wet, but I was actually a little bit frightened, he said. Coming from the GP3 car, an F1 car has more than double the horsepower! So I think just going out there and taking it easy was enough experience for me at the moment.I dont really want to go out there and spin the car, put it in the gravel and give the mechanics more work to do for tomorrow. The idea is to learn what you can and go smoothly through the first day of testing.Ferrucci is hoping he will get the opportunity to push harder on his second day of testing.I was pushing it quite good in the low-speed, but I have margin for myself in the high-speed. Obviously its ridiculously quick and to go through Turn 1 flat or with a small lift will be tricky, so it just takes a little bit more than a morning session to get fully up to speed with the car.
