SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Bilal Powell has been a complementary running back for most of his career, trying to make the most of whatever opportunity comes his way. When Matt Forte went down with a knee injury in the first quarter and the New York Jets not wanting to put too much on Bryce Pettys plate in his second career start, Powell got plenty of chances.Powell ran for 145 yards and scored the game-winning 19-yard touchdown in overtime that helped the Jets overcome a 14-point deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers 23-17 on Sunday. After reaching the end zone on his career-high 29th carry, Powell fell on his back and extended his arms in celebration while waiting for the referee to announce a penalty on the 49ers that gave the Jets (4-9) the win. Powell then handed the ball to a young Jets fan in the crowd.I didnt know what happened, he said. I just knew I was tired and I was in the end zone. Im not a big celebration guy. I was just waiting for the confirmation.Powell had good reason to be tired with 34 offensive touches for 179 yards. He had carried the ball 20 times in a game just twice in his six-year career before being given the big load against a tiring defense for the 49ers (1-12).Powell scored on a 5-yard run that helped spark the comeback and then gained 24 more yards on the game-tying field goal at the end of regulation. If it wasnt for him, I dont know if we would have even won this game, coach Todd Bowles said. He single-handedly, from my point of view at least, broke every tackle he could break. He caught every ball. He ran. He blocked. He did everything, and he had outstanding effort. Here are some other takeaways from the game:PETTYS DAYPettys day couldnt have started any worse when he threw an interception that set up San Franciscos first TD on his first pass of the game. But he rebounded to make some key plays, including a 2-point conversion run that cut the deficit to 17-14, and finished 23 for 35 for 257 yards. His biggest play might have been ill-advised as he threw across his body after scrambling in overtime to complete a 26-yard pass to Robby Anderson that helped set up the winning score. He was up and down, Bowles said. He had some plays hed like to have back. He made some throws. He made some dangerous throws. He got away with some things, but he settled down and made some gutsy plays.STAGNANT OFFENSEAfter getting off to a fast start with two touchdowns in the first five minutes and taking a 17-3 lead midway through the second quarter, the 49ers offense stalled . San Francisco was held to 133 yards, no points and punted six times on the final eight drives over the last 42:10 of game time. Colin Kaepernick completed all seven passes for 95 yards in the first quarter, but went 8 for 19 for 38 yards the rest of the way as coach Chip Kelly got conservative with offensive linemen Joe Staley (hamstring) and Daniel Kilgore (leg), tight end Vance McDonald (shoulder) and receiver Torrey Smith (concussion) all out.We have to be able to adjust, adapt and go out and still win football games, Kaepernick said.HYDES BIG DAYCarlos Hyde had a career day for the 49ers, rushing for 193 yards on 17 carries and catching a 7-yard touchdown . He had four runs of more than 20 yards but also was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-2 from the New York 37 on the opening possession of overtime.Thats a play weve been running all game, Hyde said. The Jets just played good defense right there. ... I didnt have a lane where I could go. I just tried to hit it up there and tried to get a push, but they did a good job there.BAALKE BACKERCBS reported earlier in the day that 49ers general manager Trent Baalkes job status is in jeopardy because of a second straight losing season. Kelly backed Baalke.I have tremendous confidence in Trent, he said. I have not heard anything about that.WHATS NEXTThe Jets have another short week before hosting Miami on Saturday night. North Carolina is not yet in control of its future when it comes to a return appearance in the ACC Championship Game as Virginia Tech holds the tiebreaker over the Tar Heels if those two teams end up tied at the top of the Coastal Division standings at the end of the regular season. But the No. 22 Tar Heels are sitting in a much better position heading into Saturdays game against Virginia at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., (3 p.m. ET, RSN) than they were a week ago when they were bound for Miami coming off the big loss to the Hokies. The win over the Hurricanes put North Carolina (5-2, 3-1 ACC) alone in first place in the division when the Hokies lost at Syracuse to fall to 2-1 in league play.Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, however, their 20-13 victory over the Hurricanes came with a price. They lost wide receiver Mack Hollins to a broken collarbone and the senior will miss the rest of the season after having surgery. Hollins led North Carolina in touchdown catches with four among his 16 receptions. His 19.3 yards per catch average was tops among receivers with more than one catch.Fortunately for the Tar Heels, they do have depth at the position. Wide receiver Ryan Switzer has 58 catches for 606 yards, Bug Howard 29 for 429 and Austin Proehl 24 for 302. Running backs T.J. Logan and Elijah Hood have a combined 34 catches for 229 yards. We still got some guys that can stretch the field vertically, North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said. That doesnt overly concern me.Well miss Macks ability to do it. Thats probably the thing he does best, but weve got some guys who can get behind people. The Tar Heels, who have won six straight over Virginia, have gone through what arguably is the toughest part of their schedule with their four remaining conference games against teams with a combined 3-8 league mark. In addition to Virginias 1-1 conference record, Georgia Tech is 1/3 in league play, Duke 0-3 and North Carolina State 1-1. North Carolina also has a non-conference affair against The Citadel.None of the conference games figurees to be pushovers, though the Tar Heels likely will be favored in all four.ddddddddddddIf they are able to run the table, they still need Virginia Tech to lose at least one more time to get to the ACC title game. North Carolina already has beaten Pittsburgh (5-2, 2-1).Virginia (2-4, 1-1) could be an interesting matchup. The Cavaliers began the season by losing their first three games (Richmond, Oregon, Connecticut) but notched a win over Central Michigan before opening conference play by beating Duke 24-10. They lost a high-scoring 45-31 affair to Pittsburgh last week.I like my team, first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall said. I like how hard they try and how theyve embraced the culture. And were moving up the scale of the effort and intent to position mastery and execution.Thats basically where our team is right now. So were becoming better in terms of our position mastery and playing our spots. Execution is not holding yet long enough from beginning to end in all three phases to have the outcomes that we would like. But more and more plays are looking how we would like them to be.Cavaliers quarterback Kurt Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, has passed for 421, 336, and 278 yards the last three games but has seven interceptions against 14 touchdown passes for the season. The Cavaliers have a two-back approach to the rushing game with Taquan Mizzell rushing for a team-best 355 yards and Albert Reid 346.Defensively, the Cavaliers had some success at times stopping the run, holding Central Michigan to 93 yards rushing and Duke to 106, but gave up 209 yards to Pittsburgh their last outing and 301 to Oregon early in the season. Were still missing more plays in open field than what I would like, Mendenhall said. But were starting to make more than what we had before. So a work in progress. The series, which North Carolina leads 63-53-4, began in 1892 and is billed as the oldest rivalry in the South. ' ' '
