RIO DE JANEIRO -- The biggest battle Brady Ellison had to win Friday was the one going on inside his head. The American was one arrow away from the gold medal round in the mens individual archery when he flat out missed and registered an eight in a shootout against South Korean Ku Bon-chan. Ku took advantage of the opening with a nine and went on to win gold. In the meanwhile, Ellison had to immediately regroup for the bronze medal round starting moments later to avoid going home empty-handed.Ellison won the bronze 6-2 against Netherlands Sjef van den Berg, but had to get out of his own head first. You could see it even in the first two wins, I was (ticked) off and I wasnt in the match, said Ellison, whos been dreaming of an individual medal for 10 years. I knew if I wanted to come home with a medal that I needed to kind of get my (butt) in gear and get into this match. I even told my coach I need to get into this match and quit being in the last one.The week had been odd for Ellison. He had to defeat his best friend and teammate in Jake Kaminski then beat another teammate in Zach Garrett to reach the quarterfinals. The relief of medaling was apparent as he pumped his fist and let out a shout.Ellison now has three medals after the Americans won silver as a team in Rio and previously at the London Games in 2012.Its been a very, very tiring week, Ellison said. Its a long competition. Four matches a day. Ive been out here since 7:30 this morning. Its long, its stressful. You start off shooting against a teammate and then every single match is a dog fight. Its a long day.Ellisons confidence, however, never faded -- even as Ellison knew he was hurting himself mentally. In the fourth round of the bronze medal match, he ripped off a perfect 30 and busted an arrow hitting the minuscule video camera dead center.I just knew it was going to happen all week, Ellison said. Pushing for gold, had a bad shot, but bringing home the bronze.I knew when I shot (the clinching arrow) that it was going high right, but it was going to be a seven or in. And I knew I was coming away with it. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/Cardinals-Frostee-Rucker-Jersey/ . The judges scored it 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 for Jones (19-1). It was the champions closest call. Despite the loss, it was a remarkable show by the confident Swedish challenger, who had the best of the early rounds and then hung on in the fourth and fifth. STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The NHL is closer to committing its players to next years Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, pending the approval of team owners and provided other issues can be resolved. Some of the details of NHL player participation were revealed Friday in Stockholm following a meeting between representatives from the NHL, NHL Players Association, International Ice Hockey Federation, International Olympic Committee and the Sochi organizing committee. "We are proceeding under the assumption that the NHL will participate in Sochi," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly was quoted as saying on the IIHF website. "We are still working on important issues with the IIHF and the IOC, and subject to our board of governors consideration and approval, it remains the objective that Sochi will be the fifth consecutive Olympics with NHL participation and where the NHL shuts down for the duration of the Olympic tournament." The NHL would go dark Feb. 9, 2014, with approximately half of the 30 NHL clubs playing their last games Feb. 8. The league would resume Feb. 25, two days after the gold-medal game. The mens Olympic hockey tournament starts Feb. 12. One of the major issues to be resolved is player insurance. "There is obviously a risk involved when you bring over a projected 160 (to) 180 NHL players where the total contract value would be around (US)$3 billion," Daly said. "This is a risk which must be insured, especially in cases of season-ending or career-ending injuriess.dddddddddddd" IIHF president Rene Fasel did not name a deadline for when an agreement needs to be reached. "We are working hard to putting together the last pieces to ensure NHL players participation in Sochi," Fasel said. "We have some issues left, but I, as always, remain optimistic." Daly also gave no indication when the NHL would give its final approval for Sochi. "Hopefully sometime soon we will be able to give the recommendation to our board of governors regarding our leagues Olympic participation," he said. NHL players selected by their countries to participate in the tournament would travel by charter from four North American hubs and arrive in Sochi on Feb. 10. The NHL wants the ability to markets its players on NHL-TV and its website during the Games, which is complicated because of television rights issues. "We want to promote the fact that the NHL and its players are participating in the Olympics during a period when our league shuts down," Daly said. The NHL wants seven referees and six linesmen in Sochi, as well as a dozen of its own security personnel there. The IIHF says teams will be asked to submit rosters five to six weeks prior to the Games. Those rosters will be increased by two skaters from the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Each country can now name 22 skaters and three goaltenders. Canada is in a pool with Finland, Norway and Austria. The schedules for both the mens and womens tournaments have yet to be announced.
