What do you need to know about last nights big stories? Joe McDonald gives us his take on the biggest and best. This is where we say, Morning, Joe.McDavid is just getting started: Pittsburgh Penguins forward Conor Sheary might have stolen the show with his two goals in the teams 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers. But make no mistake:?Connor McDavid proved once again that he can play with the best in the world -- as in, the Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby -- and also stand out as an all-around talent. McDavid, 19, had three assists in his first matchup against Crosby. Although Crosby, 29, is still in his prime, the league and its fans should be thrilled that once the torch is passed, McDavid will be a great ambassador for the game. His incredible speed, sense and hockey IQ are already at an elite level. He has three or more points in seven of his 59 career games. Theres plenty more coming from McDavid, so sit back and enjoy because its going to be a pleasure watching him develop into one of the games greats.Laine keeps scoring: During a World Cup of Hockey practice for Team Finland, goalie Tuukka Rask was repeatedly scored on by phenom Patrik Laine. At one point, Laine scored a goal at point-blank range that Rask later admitted he never saw. There was an image of the goalie just looking at the puck in the net in total disbelief. It was at that moment Rask realized just how talented Laine is as an 18-year-old forward. On Tuesday, Laine scored his second career hat trick in only his 14th NHL game. It was also a career-high four points as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Dallas Stars 8-2. Laine now has 11 goals and four assists for 15 points. Its fitting that he becomes the first player to score 11 goals in his first 14 career games since fellow Finn Teemu Selanne accomplished the feat in 1992-93. Selanne was an incredible player. Laine is going to be better.Where does Nash fit it?: Its hard to figure out the legacy of the New York Rangers Rick Nash. The forward scored his 400th career goal -- the 92nd player in NHL history to do so -- during Tuesdays 5-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. The Rangers are off to a strong start (10-4-0), and Nash, 32, is one of the reasons the Rangers are poised for a solid season. But its still difficult to define his career. He is one of three NHL players to score at least 400 goals since 2002-03, the start of his rookie season, joining Alex Ovechkin and Jarome Iginla. Strangely enough, all three have yet to win a Stanley Cup. And all three players are in a class of their own because in order to achieve that elite status, they must win a championship. Ovechkin and Iginla are no doubt future Hall of Famers, but Nash is borderline. Cheap Adidas Shoes Online . Clarkson had been dealing with an elbow injury in early January and will be out of action for at least one week. He has three goals and five assists through 36 games with the Leafs this season. The (11-11-4) Jets are seventh in the Central Division with 26 points. Fifth place Dallas and sixth-seeded Nashville also have 26 points, but the Stars have three games in hand on Winnipeg while Nashville has two. Discount Adidas Shoes . The move comes after the Canadiens were approached by the Buffalo Sabres for permission to speak to Dudley - a former Sabres player and head coach. "The Sabres called for permission and I appreciate that, Im flattered, Dudley told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN. Adidas Shoes Clearance . Breaking three of his own world records on his way to winning in Paris, Chan silenced the critics and left the audiences standing in appreciation and awe. CLEVELAND -- Yan Gomes completed a comeback even he doubted was possible.Given little chance to play in the postseason after breaking his right hand last month, Clevelands catcher made the clubs postseason roster and will play in the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox.Its an amazing recovery for Gomes, who was days away from returning to the lineup after missing two months with a separated right shoulder when he was hit was a pitch and broke his hand. Its been a roller coaster of emotions, man, Gomes said Wednesday. I went from sitting in a hospital room with my hand broken, not going to lie, crying my eyes out because Im not going to be part of the team. But then once I got my stuff together, I was like, `Ya know what, I can try to make a comeback, got to play a couple games and to be put on the roster is pretty rewarding for me and Im just going to try to do my best to help our team any way I can.Gomes hand isnt completely healed, but thats not going to stop him now, not with a chance to play in the postseason for the second time in his career.Im just going to tape it as tight as we can and hopefully it stays together, he said. But I can tell you, Im going to give 100 percent every time. When Gomes broke his hand on Sept. 14 while playing for Double-A Akron, it appeared his season was over.Doctors told him it could take up to two months to heal, but after picking up a ball and throwing it, Gomes dedicated himself to doing everything he could to get back on the field.Once I first started throwing the ball around, Im like, if I can flick it without noticing, it doesnt hurt as bad, he said. The oonly thing was starting to hit.dddddddddddd The first time I hit, it didnt feel very good. The second time, I saw some progress. This was three days after. The hand is still broken, theres still going to be some pain, but they told me, `Look, if you can tolerate it, its not going to get any worse. He returned to the lineup in the seasons final week, but only played a few innings in the field. But then, with an at-bat that seemed pulled from the script of a feel-good movie, Gomes connected for a home run on the first pitch he faced Sunday in Kansas City. The shot electrified his teammates, who have been pulling hard for him to get back.Im really happy for him as an individual, Game 1 starter Trevor Bauer said. Obviously hes going to help our team. Theres no question about that. But just on a personal side, to have him be able to come back and be a part of something that he was a big part of all year and over the past couple of years that hes been here, its really great to see for him.Indians manager Terry Francona, who is carrying three catchers on his ALDS roster, isnt sure how much Gomes will play.I dont think its probably fair to ask him to be a starting catcher and catch nine innings, he said. I think what wed usually try to do during the season, and try to do now, is take what the players do well, try to maximize that, which is certainly catching and throwing, knowledge of the staff, so we can use that. Hes not limited there. And we can use that.If it grows into more, that would be good. ' ' '
