NEW YORK -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell disagrees with Colin Kaepernicks choice to kneel during the national anthem, but recognizes the quarterbacks right to protest.Asked by The Associated Press about Kaepernicks decision not to stand before games when the national anthem is played, Goodell said in an email Wednesday: I dont necessarily agree with what he is doing.I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we dont live in a perfect society, Goodell added. On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL. I personally believe very strongly in that.Goodell added that NFL players have a visible platform for their viewpoints. With that comes responsibility to use those platforms properly. We have to choose respectful ways of doing that so that we can achieve the outcomes we ultimately want and do it with the values and ideals that make our country great, said Goodell, whose late father, Charles, was a U.S. senator.I think its important to have respect for our country, for our flag, for the people who make our country better; for law enforcement; and for our military who are out fighting for our freedoms and our ideals.Kaepernick wouldnt stand for the anthem at his teams preseason games, with San Francisco 49ers teammate Eric Reid and Seattles Jeremy Lane doing the same. Kaepernick has cited racial injustice and police brutality among the many reasons for his actions and said he plans to continue to not stand for the anthem during the regular season.Kaepernick said Wednesday on his Instagram account that he will donate all the money he receives from his jersey sales to charity to thank fans for their support. He said hes pleased his 49ers jersey has become the top seller in the NFL since his protest became public. The 49ers open their season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night. Also in reaction to Kaepernicks actions:- U.S. hockey coach John Tortorella said hed bench any player who stays seated during the national anthem. Tortorella, who will coach the United States at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, told ESPN : If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game.Tortorella, who also coaches the Columbus Blue Jackets, talked a bit more about his view Wednesday.I feel very strongly of being able to say what you want to say in your way, about youre upset about things, he said. You have your right to do that, but to bring that flag and anthem into it and drag that down, no way. So I feel strongly both ways.Tortorellas son Nick is an Army Ranger and is deployed in the Middle East. When there are men and women that give their lives for their flag, for their anthem, have given their lives, continue to put themselves on the line with our services for our flag, for our anthem, families that have been disrupted, traumatic physical injuries, traumatic mental injuries for these people that give us the opportunity to do the things we want to do, Tortorella said. Theres no chance an anthem and a flag should come into any type of situation where youre trying to make a point.- New York Jets receiver Brandon Marshall spoke out on WFAN Radio , saying he disagreed with host Boomer Esiason, who had criticized Kaepernick.Marshall also discussed the issue a bit at practice Wednesday.Like it or not, this is a civil rights movement. Its a civil rights issue, Marshall said. Martin Luther King did an amazing job of making sure everyone was at the table. What I mean by that is, he never once went against America. He always said America was an amazing nation. Whether he believed that or not, I dont know, but I say that because if you want to get things done, you have to do it in a way where everyones at the table.- Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin said he has considered joining Lane in not standing for the anthem.`I want to make sure I get all my ducks in a row before I do so, Baldwin said.My grandfather being in the military it hit home for me as well. Its the veterans that have reached out and said thats what they fought for, thats what they sacrificed their lives for was to give people back home under the flag, under this country, the opportunity to stand up or sit for what they believe in. So that was very heartening for me to hear that.Teammate Bobby Wagner believes the Seahawks should act together because thats that the world needs to see.Anything we want to do, its not going to be individual, he added. Its going to be a team thing. The world needs to see people coming together versus being individuals.---AP Sports Writers Tim Booth in Renton, Washington and Dennis Waszak Jr. in Florham Park, New Jersey contributed.AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLShea Theodore Jersey . DETROIT -- The Baltimore Orioles caught Jordan Zimmermann at the perfect time.Saturday, in Zimmermanns first start off the disabled list, the Orioles hit three homers before chasing him in the second inning and moved back ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the AL wild-card race with an 11-3 rout.Thats a very, very good pitcher and we happened to catch him on an off night, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. I certainly wouldnt want to be facing him in his next start.Adam Jones and Chris Davis homered in the first inning off Zimmermannn (9-6), and Matt Wieters connected in the second and sixth innings. At this point in the season, with us in the race, every win is huge, Wieters said. Obviously, it feels good to hit two homers tonight, but only because they came in a win. If we had lost, it wouldnt have mattered.Baltimore is two games behind first-place Boston in the tightly bunched AL East and one game back of wild-card leader Toronto. The Orioles are one game ahead of the Tigers and New York Yankees for the second wild card.Ubaldo Jimenez (7-11) allowed two runs, four hits and three walks in seven innings. The guys gave me a great start, and I just wanted to get us deep into the game with that lead, he said. My sinker was really good tonight, and I was able to throw all the breaking pitches whenever I needed them.Zimmermannn, bothered by a neck injury, has been on the disabled list three times and was making his first big league start since Aug. 4 and his second since June 30. He allowed six runs and four hits -- including three homers -- and two walks while getting three outs. He threw 42 pitches and faced 10 batters.I was terrible tonight, so this loss is on me, he said. I felt fine physically, but I couldnt locate any of my pitches. I was trying to hit the corner with my fastball, and Id miss five inches outside or five inches over the plate.Between his stints on the disabled list, Zimmermannn has an 8.84 ERA in eight starts since the beginning of June. With the Tigers deep in the race, it isnt clear what his immediate future holds. Were going to weigh a number of factors, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said whhen asked if Zimmermannn will remain in the rotation.dddddddddddd We need to win games, and well decide how we think we can best do that. After an 11-minute rain delay at the start, Adam Jones hit Zimmermannns first pitch on a high arc into the Tigers bullpen in left. After Manny Machado drew a one-out walk, Chris Davis launched a 2-0 fastball deep into the Baltimore bullpen in center.J.D. Martinezs RBI single cut the gap to 3-1 in the bottom half, when Jimenez retired Justin Upton on a grounder to strand runners at the corners. When I got into trouble, Matt came out there and calmed things down, Jimenez said. He just kept calling for all the right pitches and I just had to throw them.Wieters hit a two-run homer in the second, when Blaine Hardy threw a run-scoring wild pitch. Wieters hit a three-run homer off Buck Farmer in the sixth.Ausmus responded by making eight lineup changes for the seventh, changing every position but catcher.TRAINERS ROOMOrioles: Davis said he plans to keep playing despite a sore left hand that has bothered him for most of the season. Orioles manager Buck Showalter has tried to rest his first baseman by taking him out of lopsided games, and replaced him with Drew Stubbs in the seventh on Saturday..LOOK OUTTigers third-base coach Dave Clark was uninjured after being hit on his rear by Erick Aybars hard one-hopper in the fourth inning. Clark, who stands closer to the plate than most third-base coaches, laughed off the incident. Clark took a glancing blow in the eighth inning from a Steven Moya grounder as he tried to pirouette out of the way.In all the years Ive been in this game, I have never seen a third-base coach get hit twice in the same night, Showalter said. Baseball will never cease to surprise you.UP NEXTTigers ace Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.28) faces Baltimores Chris Tillman (15-5, 3.76) in Sundays series finale. Tillman is coming off the disabled list, while Verlander is 6-1 with a 2.09 ERA in his last 11 games, posting a quality start each time. ' ' '
